How to Handle a Cannabis Overload Without Freaking Out
Dealing with the after affects of over-consuming cannabis is not fun and can be scary if you aren't aware of what's going to happen. The number one thing you need to remember is to stay calm. No need to call emergency services or your mom (I mean, you can if you want). Over-consuming cannabis is not lethal and you are going to be OK. No one has ever died from over-consuming straight cannabis. I am not a medical professional nor is Cloud Cat, so we are not in the habit of giving out medical advice. However, below are some tips that have helped me and many others for reducing the effects of cannabis in case you accidentally overdid it.
1. Stay Calm: Again, I said it before and it's always easier said than done, but stay calm. It's gonna be OK, it's just gonna take some time. It's hard to say exactly how long because everyone is different but knowing this won't kill you should help you stay calm. 🙂
2. Have some lemon or black pepper: Lemon and black pepper are known to contain specific terpenes that can help mitigate the effects of excessive cannabis consumption. When I know I'm going to be consuming more cannabis than usual for a video recording (sometimes you have to redo the shot), I will always drink lemonade for the entire duration of the recording. Limonene is a terpene found in lemon, and has anxiety-reducing properties, while beta-caryophyllene, found in black pepper, interacts with the endocannabinoid system to potentially alleviate some of the discomfort. Consider chewing on a slice of lemon (you can also sprinkle sugar on it), or drink a real lemonade and, put some black pepper on a snack.
3. Have some CBD: CBD (cannabidiol), another compound found in the cannabis plant, helps counteract the psychoactive effects of THC and promote relaxation. CBD is available in various forms, such as tinctures, edibles, oils, and smokables. If you have access to CBD products, consuming them might help bring a sense of balance and calmness during an overwhelming cannabis experience. Keep in mind if you smoke CBD, you will feel the effects quicker than if you eat it.
4. Eat something: Have a snack like some chips or crackers or a sandwich (or whatever). Eat food. It will help bring you down from your high.
5. Wait it out: Lay down and take a nap; sit on the couch and put on a movie; find something to color or play a game to occupy your mind. It will help pass the time.
Accidentally overdoing a smoke sesh with your buddy or edibles can be an unsettling experience, but there are various strategies to help alleviate the discomfort and bring balance back to your body and mind. If you recognize the signs of overdoing it, you can take action with the suggestions above and navigate through the situation so much easier. Remember, moderation is key, and learning from this experience can help you make more informed choices about your cannabis consumption in the future. I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.
